About headshots

“Headshot” is the common description for a close-up portrait of a person’s face. The term is known from fashion and editorial photography. It refers to the 8″x10″ photo prints common in the world of actors, musicians and other entertainers.

Headshots or portraits?

In many cases, we approach a headshot as a portrait, calling upon years of experience in flattering posing, lighting and retouching to produce the best image possible. Unless otherwise requested, we do retouch our headshots: this may be the difference that ultimately makes you happy with your headshot.

In the case of actors, models and entertainers, the portrait approach is often not appropriate. In those cases we work to get a more candid, impromptu look. We typically include more of the figure, including arm and hand gestures and some basic props. The intention is usually to get a number of usable images, so we make more exposures, often include some wardrobe changes, and changes of background.

Studio or location?

Headshots may be done in the studio or at your location. For individuals, coming to the studio is probably the easiest and least expensive choice, although we often go on location for individuals who can’t spare the time, or desire another environment. If you’re a company, such as a law firm or investment company, you may have more than one or two people at a time who need to be photographed. In that case it will be less expensive and more convenient to have the work done at your location. We can easily set up in an office or conference room and photograph any number of people with little inconvenience.

Finishing up

Within a day of the photo session, we post proofs of your poses to a password

protected website. Once you’ve looked them over and made your selection, we perform the retouching and return the finished headshot to you by email or ftp as a digital image in the jpeg  format. If prints are called for, we produce them in house and contact you when they are ready to be picked up.
